When we arrived in Kildare and set about to eat our first meal, we were so pleasantly surprised to discover this quaint town with a 1500-year old history also boasted a fabulous food scene. We ate at three restaurants around Kildare: The Green Barn (located about a half hour south of Kildare the town, in Athy, Hartes of Kildare, and Strong’s Cafe (the latter two were located in the village center).
This food scene is quite good and it wasn’t immediately obvious to us despite the planning. Kildare is commuter town into Dublin but it also serves the visitors who come to visit the nearby Stud Farm and Gardens, suggesting a healthy base of support for quality food and markets.
The Green Barn
Tucked away in Athy, County Kildare, The Green Barn came recommended from Ann’s good friend and so we booked it a week in advance. We were so glad we did; the vegetables are locally sourced from their garden in the back and the inside has a beautiful aesthetic that is relaxing and spacious, a mix of modern and rustic.

Hartes of Kildare – Michelin star rated in the heart of Kildare
Hartes of Kildare is a Michelin star restaurant located in the middle of town; we just happened to pass by it on the way to peek at the Cathedral on the night we arrived. “Why not that one?” Ann said, “It had a Michelin star in the window.” We were lucky enough to arrive early, get a seat tucked into the corner by the small bar, and enjoy a delicious meal of steak, burgers, potato skins, and spiced tomato soup. It was comfort food with delicious layers of flavor, a beautiful aesthetic, and generous portions.

Strong’s Cafe
Finally, we had breakfast on the morning of our departure at Strong’s Cafe, located a few steps from Harte’s of Kildare. This was another absolute gem of a place, with quick and friendly service and a delicious meal including a homemade granola pot, french toast, and an an Irish breakfast sandwich.
