Leg 3: From Kildare to Cavan, via prehistoric Tara

Dad’s family is from Cavan so we decided to take some time to visit; Ann and I have not visited Cavan since Mom and Dad took us in the 1980s, so we decided to visit Killashandra (Grandpa’s family’s home “town”) in the 1800s in County Cavan. Here it is, mapped:

We will be taking the motorways to leverage the higher speed access north while we also take in some super interesting historical sites:

  • The Hill of Tara which “has been important since the late Stone Age, when a passage tomb was built there. However, the site became truly significant in the Iron Age (600 BC to 400 AD) and into the Early Christian Period when it rose to supreme prominence – as the seat of the high kings of Ireland. All old Irish roads lead to this critical site.”

Here is the route for today…we will be heading north from Kildare to Killashandra. We’ll be on a combination of highways and secondary (local town) roads so there will be a mixture of scenic views to take in.
